Another Informal and (Somewhat) Inconsequential Survey

October 9, 2008

A couple weeks ago my baby brother, who for some strange reason became an 18-year-old guy overnight, started his freshman year in college.

I cannot believe it.

More than anything else, that makes me feel so old. Not having a job, not paying bills, not traveling alone to a foreign country. My little brother is all alone in college. Which of course makes my parents officially empty-nesters but that’s a completely different post…

Anyway, I remember when I was in college constantly going to my mailbox and checking for a letter, a card, a package, anything. I always saw other girls with wonderful care packages from their parents who clearly loved them more than mine (slight exaggeration, possibly, but it’s what I thought as an 18-year-old). I decided it would be nice to send my brother a care package. He already knows that I have a couple things on the way, but I thought about filling it out with maybe two or three more fun items. Nothing expensive, but just things that a college freshman guy would need/want.

Only problem: I’ve never been a college freshman guy, so I’m not sure what that actually is. I having a sneaky suspicion my penchant for scented candles and lipgloss won’t go over very well with him.

Guys (and gals, too!), any suggestions for what I should get for my little bro? And don’t say porn! Or cigarettes or anything else gross. I’m his sister.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, and don’t worry, he doesn’t read this blog.

I would suggest consumables like shampoo, body wash, dish soap, napkins, ramen, granola bars, etc. These are the things that everyone needs to buy, but doesn’t want to spend their hard-earned money on.

Oh! I thought of more fun things! Board and card games are a big hit. Especially small games like Fluxx, Set, or Lunch Money. He can just whip those out and make instant friends.

Gift cards (on-campus bookstore or local grocery store) plus a goofy fun t-shirt or new wallet. Every guy I know needs a new wallet. Does he have any techie gadgets – Ipod, Blackberry, cell phone, etc? A new accessory for that might go over well (case, applications). Poster for his dorm room (though not Klimpt ;)? Popcorn – always goes over well with college students. Does he have a hot pot or coffeemaker? If not, picking an inexpensive one up and shipping it off filled with stuff to cook in it might be nice. Long distance phone cards. Also, chocolate works equally well for boys and girls. Personal manicure set – one of the best presents I ever got for my hubby when we first started dating. A string of lights for his dorm room? His favorite DVD that has come out somewhat recently. Three-month Netflix subscription? Oooh, how about a USB thumb drive? I’ll guarantee he’ll use it a LOT. How does he do with note-taking? A voice-recorder might be a helpful investment.

    Hope one of these helps!

Chocolate chip cookies. They are ALWAYS a hit around here – even if they arrive in crumbs.

    Candy.

Gift cards to Target, Best Buy, whatever else is around.

Honestly, it isn’t so much what is IN the care package but the fact that you GET one. Because like you said, it clearly means your family cares more than your roommates and friends families.

T-shirts. I don’t know what your brother is studying, but T-shirts are always useful. Maybe you can get some freebies from clients for your company.
